South County Softball League
Team Parent - Season Checklist
SCSL Coaches and Team Parents must obtain a Roanoke County Volunteer ID Badge specific to SCSL, which is to be worn at all times.
You must register as a Volunteer at www.SouthCountySoftball.com
A background check will be conducted by Roanoke County Parks and Recreation. You will be notified when it is complete.
Pick up your ID Badge at the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation building located at 1206 Kessler Mill Road, Salem VA 24153, 540-777-8282. Hours are M-F 8:30 am-4:30 pm.
Create a contact list for the team to facilitate good efficient communication throughout the season. Consider an app such as gamechanger to help with this.
Distribute team uniform shirts and socks. Each player will need to purchase gray pants. Pants can be purchased at Play It Again Sports at 4802 Electric Road. No metal cleats are permitted.
Assess interest level and if positive, make a snack and drink schedule for each game. Discounted drinks may be purchased at the concession stand for a discount if meeting a 10 drink minimum.
Assess interest level and if positive, set up an end of season party for your team. Picnic shelters at Penn Forest can be reserved, or a backyard cookout/potluck, or Bellacinos are traditional team favorites.
Assess interest level and if positive, collect $ for small coaches appreciation gifts and trophies for girls to distribute at your end of season party.
Coordinate your team’s Volunteer Schedule for the Opening Day festivities, and for your team’s Concession Stand hours, assigned during the season. Assign volunteer slots and have parents work out changes as needed. On Opening Day there will be a sign-in sheet for the volunteers, if a team has all volunteer slots filled, they will be entered to win a $50 Bellacino's gift card that could be utilized for the end of season party. An app like sign up genius is optional but could help with volunteer coordination.
Consider keeping a first aid kit to have at practices and games. There are ice packs in the Concession Stand, and first aid kits in the Concession Stand and the Batting Cage.
Ongoing, throughout the season, promote the end of season 8u Tournament and the RAYSA tournament. See details in supplemental materials. Early sign ups help with team creation and ordering uniforms!
Discuss with coaches the plan for distributing information to parents, as this looks slightly different for every team. Agree on a plan for distribution of the game schedule and how to handle communications about upcoming games, practices, cancellations, and rescheduled games. Decide who will hand out the Sportsmanship Coupons to the players; the goal being that each girl is awarded one throughout the season to recognize her unique contribution to the team.
