The SCSL Hotline (540-966-7408) is another important source of information.
Please take advantage of the information posted on the website as well as the hotline, and also look for us on Facebook and Instagram!
Age Cut-Off
The age cut-off date is December 31, 2024. A player's League Age for the 2025 Season is the same as what their actual age was on Dec 31, 2024. A complete age chart is posted on our website for your convenience, at also at the bottom of this email.
*Roanoke County allows children to play in our league if they were born before October 1, 2019, and are enrolled in kindergarten.
Uniforms
Team jerseys and socks will be provided by the league, but every player (ages 5-17) will be required to purchase Grey Softball Pants.
Grey pants can be purchased at “Play it Again Sports” on Electric Road, or through online retailers (Search for Champro BP11 Softball pants or the equivalent). Please be mindful of whether you are ordering a Youth or Adult size!
Sponsorships
Team sponsorships are offered every year which help support our local business friends as thanks for supporting our league. Sponsors may be a company, group, or individual. This tax-deductible contribution entitles the sponsor to a large custom banner that will hang on our outfield fence for the year and scroll on our website. Sponsors also receive a team plaque to acknowledge their support. The proceeds from sponsorships go to the league’s general account. Sponsorships are granted on a first-come, first-served basis so make your plans early to assure that the team that you want to sponsor is available
Coaches Needed
Coaches are needed each season for teams at all age levels. We need a Head Coach, 2-3 Assistant Coaches, and a Team Parent for each of our teams. Leave the folding chair at home and come out where the game is played. This is a great opportunity to create lasting memories and help your daughter’s team have a great season! If you are interested in being a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or Team Parent, please contact the appropriate Division Director as soon as possible. Division Directors can be found under "contacts" on the website. NYSCA Clinics are mandatory for all head coaches and will be offered online
Umpires Needed
Umpires are needed for games at all age levels. Experience the game in a whole new way! If you or someone you know is interested in umpiring, please register online through our website: www.SouthCountySoftball.com. You will be contacted by our Umpire Coordinator with information about the Umpire Clinics prior to the start of the season and provided rulebooks, local rules, class instruction, field instruction, and a shirt. SCSL will accept 15-year-olds but will limit their umpiring to the 8U (Mini-Mites) level.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Want to get involved with softball but don’t wish to coach? Well, there is a job for you in South County Softball League!!! The league needs many volunteers “outside the fences” to keep the league running smoothly. If you have any questions or want to volunteer please contact Tracy McCown, 540-353-6554.
Background Checks
Background checks are mandated by Roanoke County for all Volunteers who are on the field or in the dugout with an SCSL team during practices and games. SCSL is very supportive of this Roanoke County mandate and will not make any exceptions. If you are interested in coaching/assistant coaching or helping an SCSL team in any way, please go to the SCSL website: www.SouthCountySoftball.com to register so a background check can be processed. All volunteers must register on the SCSL website even if that volunteer has an ID Badge (background check) from another sport. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Play Up Requests - Requests for players to move to an older age group require a written request to the Board of Directors.
The written request must be sent to the SCSL P.O. Box 20894, Roanoke, Virginia 24018, or by email to the League President or appropriate Division Director.
Only an official request in the form of a letter or email to the Board will be considered.
Written requests for players to move to an older age group must be received and approved by the SCSL Board of Directors before March 1.
Same Team Requests
Requests to play on the same team as a friend require that both players have requested to play with each other to be considered: they must be reciprocal. There is a place in the registration for Same Team Requests. Please be sure that both players request each other when they register. Only one Same Team Request per player will be considered.
All Same Team Requests in 8u will be accommodated to the best of our ability.
Same Team Requests in “A” level play will be considered, but are not guaranteed. This includes all teams in the 10u, 13u, and 17u divisions.
The Board cannot guarantee that all requests will be granted.
Siblings are automatically guaranteed to be on the same team.
Coach Requests - Requests for a specific coach or team will not be considered.
